Abstract

Abstract:  This article discusses the narrative of Jesus' flight to Egypt in Matthew 2:13–23 by placing it within a postcolonial hermeneutical framework and the reality of contemporary displacement. The exile of Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus is not merely seen as a theological symbol that fulfils prophecy, but rather seeks to reveal the power relations, agency, and resistance of the subaltern under imperial rule. This study aims to emphasise that the flight in Matthew 2:13–23 represents the strategies of marginalised subjects in facing paranoid and repressive power, and to relate it to the reality of contemporary displacement. This study uses a qualitative method with a postcolonial hermeneutic approach to interpret Matthew 2:13–23. Data were collected through a literature study and text analysis. The results show that the family of Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus appear as migrant subjects who have the capacity to read the political situation, make strategic decisions, and develop survival patterns as a form of non-confrontational resistance. These findings challenge the church to revise its pastoral and diaconal paradigm towards refugees and/or subalterns, from objects of pity to theological subjects who bring experiences of faith, hope, and practices of liberation.
